Out of many Bangkok tailors, you will find the legendary Savilerow in a chic hotel or sleek mall. But don’t be fooled. These digs in humble, a tailoring hub, have hosted everyone from U.S. Embassy to soccer stars, movies stars , commissioners such as the Peter Thorn, elija woods, and Michael Di Rhodes. This former uniform tailor to the Bangkok hotel staffs. These tailors also make annual trips to Europe and North America. (Schedule updates are listed on the Web site).

About two months ago, I went to visit Savile Row Clothiers, the travelling Bangkok tailors who happened to be one of the few with Newyork on their itinerary. I wanted to give them a shot to see if they would be a cheaper alternative to my tailor here in New york for basic items. I made a post about it, and a few people PM’d me asking for a review of the clothes once I received them because they were also thinking of using this service. This morning I woke up to find a snow covered box on my doorstep with Savile Row Clothiers printed across the top. So here’s my review:

Fabric: The selection of fabrics of available through Savile Row clothiers is quite extensive in terms of swatches available, For my experiment, I decided to go with a basic black with grey pine fabric which was Super 130’s, but struck me as an average quality fabric in terms of appearance, softness, etc. Normally suits start at $150, but the one I selected was $350.

The fitting: I went to their store at Rose hotel where it was crammed with people looking through swatch books and waiting in line to get fitted. I decided to remove a little bit of the guesswork by bringing my favorite fitting jacket and pants, a Hugo Boss Eagle jacket. I asked the tailor to use my measurements, but recreate the fit of those items as much as possible, which is quite trim. He happily measured me and my garments and made adjustments for where he thought my garments needed to be tweaked. He even measured the proportions of the lapels to make sure they were spot on.

    The results:

Nine months on from my first Savile Row suit, I had tried six suits from other avenues before returning. I was very happy with my first Savile Row suit. But I wanted to make sure, before becoming a life-long subscriber to the Row, that I was completely comfortable in my justification for doing so. I didn’t want to live at the apex of personal tailoring for any pretence of grandeur. I would only want to subscribe to the Row if it provided the best value for money.

I decided to return to the same Savile Row tailor. I wanted to test the theory that developing a relationship with one tailor would be of increased value in all subsequent suits. I hoped that continuing with the same tailor would allow him to assess his first suit and make improvements with the second. I am delighted to report that this is exactly what happened.

I was surprised at home critical the tailor was of his first suit. I had arrived with a list of points which I wanted to address. He addressed each of my six points and two more which I had not thought of and couldn’t have then understood.

I was also delighted to be informed that the tailor had since updated his pattern. The meant a slightly slimmer upper arm, slimmer middle-leg and slightly longer torso. I think this a very good and reassuring sign.

The quite unexpected bonus, was that after the improvements for my second suit had been agreed, the tailor offered to take my first suit away and have it altered to reflect all of the agreed improvements. I was delighted!

Further to this thread, I am very pleased with my choice of suiting and lining. I think I definitely made the right choice.

If anyone has any questions about the suit, a beginner’s experience of Savile Row, or of personal tailoring in general, then please drop me a line any time. I would be pleased to hear from you.

    Thank you.
    Melons

I cannot say enough good things about this place! When I walked into Savile Row, I immediately noticed the difference– the dress samples they have are Red Carpet worthy and the craftsmanship is wonderful versus the run-of-the-mill dresses I saw in other shops. My husband has traveled all over Asia and had suits made for himself in multiple countries and he agrees that he has never seen anything like it.

If you aren’t really into high-fashion and just have some basic items you want made, you can probably go somewhere else that is a little cheaper; but if you want a complicated outfit or a precise fit, I would go to Savile Row. Look at the samples they have– specific tailors make the different outfits and if you try to get it made by another, you might be disappointed. I had two suits, three dresses, two pairs of pants, and multiple shirts made at Savile Row and am thrilled with the way they turned out. The staff will fit and re-fit your clothing as many times as you want. We had a girl “assigned” entirely to us who walked us through every decision, every fitting, everything! (Her name was Christa and I highly recommend her).

My only warning is: GO PREPARED. You ARE the designer. This is not like picking something off the rack. Know what you want made, what kind of fabric is going to work for that outfit, what colors are going to look good on you, etc. Don’t make impulse buys, and don’t do what I saw several older women doing, which was: looking at a 25-year-old girl and telling the assistant that they wanted exactly the clothing she was trying on made for them. “It’s not going to work!” I wanted to tell them. Choose what’s right for your body– they are amazing tailors, but they can’t make you look 25, or change your shape

This film is a let down. I should of realized it with the star being Angelina Jolie. She plays the usual secret agent kick ass character that you know is going to win every fight and save the day without breaking a nail. An easy watch, but there are much better films around at the moment. Wait for it to come out on DVD and save the cinema experience for a cool film.

Totally amazing. One of those films that doesn't make a lot of sense until you're half way through.. then you spend time thinking back to the earlier part of the film to piece it together. Most things with DiCaprio in are bound to be good. Amazing effects, but then these days, we come to expect it. Whoever had the idea of this movie has one active imagination. See it at the cinema, or buy a really big TV. Pay attention, or you'll be wanting to see it a second time.

The film misses out a good 89% of what makes up the amazing Nickelodeon series and misrepresents the other 11%. I feel that no one in this movie bothered to watch a single episode. The best thing about this movie is the sets and costume design but maybe that's because I was too busy wishing the characters weren't there. My recommendation would be not to waste your money on this abysmal movie or any sequels (please no!) but purchase the original box sets instead, they are a much better investment.

For 3 to 5 hundred dollars you can get a good quality custom made suit in Bangkok. The keys to success are: 1. Know what you want and be able to explain it to the person you are ordering from. Sounds simple, but many people get all excited when they walk in a shop and a week later are disappointed because the suit isn’t really what they wanted. The tailor probably could have fulfilled their request, but your wishes were never properly communicated. 2. Ensure the company you are working with is legitimate. They should stand by their work, and make as many adjustments as necessary until you are satisfied. 3. Know what you want. I know I said this already, but you have to know what you want when it comes to every detail here. My personal recommendations for value – Bangkok – Tailor Pro – I can’t say enough about the owner,Sam who overseas all of the cutting in his shop, is Zegna certified, Italian educated, and has family in the business working in Rome.

I "discovered" this restaurant back in February (2010). I actually dismissed it at first as I assumed that any place advertising cal-mex food would be too bland for my taste. I like the spicier style of Mexican. But I did notice that the place was located very conveniently, about a 30 second walk from the base of the steps at Asok BTS station. Then I found out that one of the owners was previously if not still an owner of Great American Rib Company (GARC), a place I had enjoyed in the past. That tipped the scale, so one day while near Asok, I stopped in and had ribs. As expected, they were very good, albeit a different style of sauce than GARC. I can't say which is better, I think it would depend on the day of the week or what flavor of beer I had before eating them that would make the difference. I was very impressed with the facility. Quaint and pleasant surroundings with a variety of options (outside, inside, bar, air-con, upstairs, street-side, etc.). Nicely done. So I knew I would be coming back. So the next time I went, I gave the Mexican food a try. As I had feared, it was far too pedestrian for my palate. I asked for hot sauce or peppers, but only got the standard US fare of tabasco-styled sauces: not what I was looking for. The food did not lack quality, just that flavorful kick that I appreciate so much. But still, with the service and friendliness of the wait staff, the overall experience was good. It was on my third visit that I found the secret. I was at the bar enjoying drinks, and I spoke to a waiter about the "heat factor." He told me about the sauces- the same as I had been given before- but this time I pressed the issue. I described the peppers that I have seen used in my favorite Mexican food, and he knew them immediately. He said that the cooks keep them for their own use. THAT WOKE UP THIS FOOD. He brought them out finely chopped in a small bowl, and I added to my own satisfaction. Now this is how it should be. Since, I have been a regular customer at Los Cabos. But it is more than just the food, drinks, facility and wait staff. When the afternoon/evening crowd arrives, the place is just fun- it has character. The layout of the bar is such that it promotes easy socialization. A good place to meet friends and make new ones. The only downside here is that it would be nice if the bar area was even bigger. Conclusion: Highly Recommended. Rating: 4.5 (see below) Suggestions: -Offer a variety of spice condiments and publish this information on the menu. There are just too many in Bangkok that like spicy food to ignore them. (Gee, I wonder why ?) -At the bar, offer a complimentary or VERY inexpensive finger-food like nuts or chips and salsa so customers can enjoy more margaritas.

I've been here many times as the food is excellent. I like the outside picnic tables when the weather is nice. Very nice atmosphere. My problem is with the service..the waitresses are daydreaming most of the time. I literally went to the bar myself for more drinks as they just weren't paying attention.

I have walked past here 1000 times and finally decided to stop in. Very crowded and busy. The pizza-making guys were flat out. Service was quick and they kept my beer coming. Pizza was very good and I enjoyed the whole experience.
